Under North Carolina law, in order to qualify for in-state tuition rates and NC state grants, students must prove that they established and maintained legal residence in North Carolina for 12 months before claiming residency. To do this, students must share information about themselves and their parent(s) or legal guardian(s) with the NC Residency Determination Service (RDS). To access this service, students should use their cfnc.org profile. See below for instructions on making an account.
School counselors can assist students in completing RDS. Students will first need to gather some information from the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) with whom they live the majority of the time. It is important that all information submitted on RDS is truthful and accurate, as the information provided will be checked with NC State Agencies. The form below will help your student collect the information most commonly requested on RDS. You may then use this form to complete RDS on your own or book an appointment with your school counselor for further assistance. By providing your student with this information you are helping make an easier and cheaper path to college available to them. Thank you!
